How Aeration & Overseeding Invigorates Your Lawn
Lawn aeration and overseeding are essential components of lawn maintenance and lawn care in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The summer climate puts a large strain on our grass as the heat and humidity rise above the desired climate for our most commonly grown grass, tall fescue. We recommend that your lawn is reseeded with one of our lawn care programs each fall.
What do our Reseeding Programs entail?
Aeration
Each of our reseed lawn care programs include a double core aeration. We will aerate your lawn in two directions pulling for maximum coverage. Inaccessible areas are hand aerated for the best results.
Seeding
Each of our lawn care programs include applying a certified weed free tall fescue seed. This seed will germinate in 14-30 days and provide the lush green lawn you are looking for.
Fertilizer
Our reseed basic includes a traditional fertilizer to supply the necessary nutrients for germination and growth. However, it does not provide any soil amendments or microbial activity. We recommend this option when your lawn is well established with sufficient topsoil and sufficient root depth.
Granular Compost
Granular compost is offered in our middle of the road reseed program. It looks like brown fertilizer, but provides the powerful punch of organic matter. This product is applied with a push spreader to provide fertilizer like results with the benefits of a small amount of organic matter. This is a great option when you have a well established lawn with sufficient topsoil but the lawn lacks vigor. Granular compost is also odorless and budget friendly.
Bulk Compost
Bulk compost is offered in our most popular reseeding program. Bulk compost is applied at ¾ of a cubic yard per 1000 square feet of lawn. This provides immediate soil amendments that change the structure of your soil. Bulk compost also provides a cover for the seed with great water retention. We see a significant increase in germination rates when bulk compost is applied in conjunction with seeding. Bulk compost is offered with our best reseed option and changes the soil reducing the need for watering, adding organic matter, and lessening compaction.
Why Aerate Your Lawn?
Throughout the year, your lawn's soil can become compacted from regular lawn traffic, watering, and mowing. This can cause your lawn to lose its vigor if not regularly aerated. Core aeration pulls plugs from the soil to reduce compaction and allow for water and air to readily reach the root system of your lawn. Lawn aeration ensures the roots of your lawn can grow deep into the earth, retaining moisture to prevent damage during drought conditions.
Why Overseed Your Lawn?
-
Lawn overseeding fills in summer lawn damage or bare patches where weeds have been killed off throughout the course of the year.

-
Lawn overseeding improves the density of your lawn, boosts your lawn’s rich green color, and builds your lawn’s resistance to disease and drought.
Why Topdress Your Lawn?
There are many reasons to topdress your lawn at seeding time. Here are our favorites:

-
When applied at the same time as seeding, the compost retains water to ensure maximum germination from the seed applied

-
Adds valuable nutrients to your soil that are essential for grass growth and development

-
Improves soil structure and reduces compaction

-
Aids in water retention and drainage

-
Promotes root development

-
Adds microbial activity to the soil which aids in breaking down organic matter

The lawn reseeding season begins the first week of September and continues through the end of October. Fall is the best time to perform lawn reseeding as it is warm during the day with cool nights for a sustained period. Germination of your new seed takes between 7-21 days.
